HOUSING For years a large portion of the Ryan contracts have been in the housing industry and a great deal of it in Florida.

The attraction of South Florida from the standpoint of earthwork volumes has been the regulatory requirement that all housing be built at or above a minimum defined elevation, generally 3 to 6 feet above natural ground.

This, coupled with an often re-occurring problem of muck removal, mandated a significant earthwork requirement. Initially the interest was in the earthmoving component of the housing contract, but underground and paving soon became part of the Ryan housing contracts.

For many years the fill for Dade and Broward counties was acquired by blasting rock on site, casting it with large draglines, and rehauling the rock to make fill. With the wholesale prohibition of blasting, fill is now dug to much shallower depths with backhoes. Expensive imported fill has replaced much of the efficient lake excavation of the past. The Ryan Organization, however, is well equipped to meet these changing needs.
